Swiss Animal Protection SAP
Swiss Animal Protection SAP is the umbrella organization of 58 cantonal and regional animal protection associations in Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein. Founded in 1861, it is the oldest and biggest animal protection organization operating throughout Switzerland. It is an active member of the World Society for the Protection of Animals WSPA and a consultative member of the EU’s Eurogroup for Animal Welfare.

All the efforts of Swiss Animal Protection SAP are aimed at promoting responsible treatment of animals. The SAP combats cruelty to animals as a result of ignorance, thoughtlessness and the pursuit of gain. It aims to make the general public aware of the need to keep animals in appropriate conditions and for decent, protective treatment of animals. It campaigns for better laws and proper implementation of the Animal Protection Law. To this end, it seeks constructive cooperation with the appropriate authorities. At the same time, it has set aside special tied funds to support the work of its Sections and their animal shelters.

Swiss Animal Protection SAP is based in Basel and has over 30 employees. It maintains special household pet, wild animal and domestic animal units, as well as a special unit on animal experiments and genetic engineering, a veterinary advisory service and an advisory service for legal questions relating to animal protection. Particular emphasis is also placed on interesting young people in animal protection through an SAP special unit and an animal protection teacher, who promotes animal protection ideas in schools. The Swiss Animal Protection SAP supervisory service, which is accredited by the Swiss Government, monitors livestock husbandry installations for organic label organizations, animal transport and slaughter houses.
